Sixteen

Jonas

Well, this was awkward.

I settled into the soft-as-butter leather seat, avoiding the gaze of the three-year-old who sat across from me, scowling, sucking his thumb, and staring at me like he was dissecting a martian.

I’d gotten Penny’s text two hours before boarding this luxury private jet.

Change of plans, it had read.

And then, she’d listed off a hangar number and a time to meet at a local corporate airport.

Penny was still on the runway, arguing with a woman who looked to be about the same age but almost a foot taller.

Jen, I guessed.

This was her plane. Or, her and her husband’s.

The three-year-old was Daniel.

Jen was watching Daniel for Penny over the weekend, and at the last minute, Jen had decided to come along to New York and watch Daniel there. I wasn’t sure the subject of the argument—perhaps the fact that the change was sprung on Penny at the last minute. Whatever it was, Penny’s mood ring skin looked like it was about to explode.

She was feisty, that one.

By the time they both boarded, they’d gotten over it. Or at least agreed to disagree. Penny swooped Daniel up and buckled him into a safety seat, loading a tray in front of him up with snacks.

“Thank you for being flexible, Jonas,” said Jen. “And it’s nice to meet you, by the way.”

“You, too,” I said. “I’ve…heard a lot about you.”

“I’ve heard absolutely nothing about you.”

“Uhh, yeah.” I glanced to Penny for guidance, but she was back to fuming.

Jen touched a button on her seat and said, “We’re ready whenever you are, Rick.”

“Sounds good, Mrs. James,” answered a man who I assumed was the pilot.

It wasn’t my first time on a private jet, but this one was the most nicely outfitted by far. I hated flying, period, especially in these small planes. Jen, however, was unphased by all the beeps and safety procedures going on around us.

“So,” she said, “your engagement. Let’s discuss that.”

“I can’t believe my mom called you to get dirt.” Penny pinched the bridge of her nose.

Ahh, mystery solved.

“Just call a spade a spade,” said Penny, turning to Jen. “You’re spying on us.”

“I’m not spying on you. I’m calling your bluff. You’re not engaged.”

All the color blanched from Penny’s skin as she sputtered, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Oh, please. I can believe that you’d keep a relationship quiet with your parents. But there’s no way on God’s green earth that you were dating, much less engaged to this”—she waved her arm around in the air in my general direction—“without calling me to spill ev-er-y-thing. So what’s really going on?”

“There’s nothing going on,” said Penny in a most dignified tone.

“So help me, I will have Rick turn this plane right around unless you tell me the whole truth.”

Penny narrowed her eyes before rolling them heavenward. “Fine! We’re not really engaged. He’s…he’s an actor.”

“That’s a thing?” Jen shot me a sidelong glance. “Like, a thing thing?”

“Apparently. Tish helped me cast him.”

“What’s his real name?” Jen asked.

“Okay, I’m right here,” I said.
